Up Hillingdon Struggle

On Friday 11th January the Company Section took on the 4th Hillingdon in the 2nd round of the National Table Tennis. After the first round our confidence was high, however this was short lived as we quickly went 3-0 down. Although a lot of the games were very close and everyone played well, in particular Bailey, we finally lost 7-2. We then drowned our sorrows in KFC. One positive to take from the evening was we got to play against a better level of opposition so learnt from them, and we also hope to arrange further games against them later in the year.

Congratulations to Ben, our latest ‘Jack Petchey’ achievement award winner. Ben received his medallion at a lively award ceremony at Kensington town hall on Saturday afternoon. The event brought together the award winners from the London District of the Boys’ Brigade. The young people were nominated by their peers and leaders and won awards for a variety of achievements. Ben has decided to use his £200 prize money to fund our forth coming trip to tour Wembley Stadium. Thanks Ben!

On Sunday after Church Parade we loaded the Junior Section lads into a mini bus and headed off to Box Hill. If success can be judged by laughter and smiles, then the day couldn’t have been better!

We arrived at Box Hill in the sunshine and promptly headed off to the viewing point to start a quiz that Roy and Mark had compiled which took us on a route via the upside down grave and the Old Fort. We then had a quick pit stop for lunch, before heading out on the Natural Play Trail. The trail consists of a series of stopping-off points, where children can climb trees and bridges, swing on ropes and balance on logs this proved to be a big hit with the boy’s. Next it was a walk down the 275 steps to stepping stones across the River Mole. For some of the boys this was the highlight of the day. Why use the stones when there is a perfectly good river to wade in!

London District Band Competitions

On Saturday our Battalion Band travelled to Enfield for the London District Band Competitions.

The lads had all been working hard in the build up to the competition with weeks of practice and their dedication was then really put to the test by the sad passing of our Bandmaster, Dave Cherry.

When we arrived we were informed that we could only enter one of the two competitions on the evening.  We consulted the senior boys who decided to enter the Devonshire Cup as they thought that was what Dave Cherry would have wanted despite being guaranteed a first place in the Novice competition due to being the only entrant.

The boys gave a good account of themselves; with a third place finish in the main competition, and Jake achieved a creditable second place in the Drum Major competition.

All in all it was a good night.  The lads seemed to enjoy the experience and the audience really appreciated their performance in the light of the difficult circumstances with a huge round of applause.

The sun was out for our return visit to BB Headquaters Feldon Lodge for this year’s company section mini-camp. The boys undertook a series of activities including quizzes, challenges and sporting events. Cooking was also on the agenda, with the boys in charge of making breakfast and surprisingly us leaders all survived!! Night time brought the usual fun and games, room wars, spiders and joke telling, so apologies to all parents for returning tired children to you but boys will be boys!!
