Saturday 17th November saw us enter the National Master Team 1st Round at Cheam Baptist Church. This is a "quiz" for want of a better word. It had such rounds as BB Knowledge, Bible Knowledge, The Olympics, TV Cars, Queen the Band, Tintin the Film, Blockbusters and more. We came 6th, which sadly did not see us through to the next round. But good luck to the 1st Cheam (Winners of this round) and the 14th Kingston and Merton (Runners-up) in the next round.

Then Wednesday saw us played the 1st Bracknell in the National Chess Competition, at home for a change. Each team was made up of three players and everyone got to play each of the three opponents. With a couple of close games (two ending in a draw) we lost 6-3. Good luck to the Bracknell team in the second round.

Tonight was the start of our Christmas services, the Christingle Service. A Christingle is made up from four main parts. They are:

  • The orange – represents the world
  • The red ribbon – indicates the love and blood of Christ
  • The dried fruits and sweets – symbols of God’s creations
  • The lit candle – symbolises Jesus, the light of the world.

Lights Camera Action

For the last night of this year’s Company Section programme, we set the lads the task of planning a route and taking photos of a seasonal character amongst the Christmas Lights in London.

We started the evening earlier than usual, meeting at Worcester Park station at 6.00pm and after a noisy journey up to Waterloo the boy’s split into four groups to start their trek through central London finishing up at Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park. With only a couple of mistakes in the navigation (mainly due to the leaders) and despite the weather everybody seemed to have a good time.

The leaders are meeting up on Friday to judge the photography competition. So watch this space to see the results.

After much deliberation we whittled the photos down, and selected the best photograph from each team. These are the best four.

Saturday was our last chance to stay in this year’s National Competitions. This time it was the turn of the Company Section boys to show us what they could do in the first round of Five-a-side football. The games were being played at The Dome which is Readings training facility next to the Madejski Stadium, and although it was cold, the facilities were brilliant.

Unfortunately we started slowly and lost our first game against 2nd Ruislip 3-0, but managed to come back fighting in our next two games with wins against 4th Southampton and 1st Torquay. These victories were inspired by a fine penalty save from Ben and a sweet shot from just inside the halfway line, resulting in a cracking goal for Charlie. This left us needing a win against 2nd Reading to see us into the next round. Sadly it wasn’t to be. Reading went 2 goals up quite quickly, our heads dropped and despite some valiant defending we went on to lose the game 4-0.

Never mind there’s always next year
